I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in middle school, around '96. At that time, it was a pretty largely unheard of disorder. As the comic states, it's a neurobiological disorder, a less severe form of autism that effects mostly social behaviors.
At some point in the last few years, diagnosis of the disorder has exploded. Whereas I used to get puzzled looks when I mentioned it, I'm more likely to find scads of people diagnosed with it everywhere I go. While I've had the fortune of meeting many great people with it... my friends and the internet at large have not.
Not a week goes by without some Fandom Wank report featuring someone being a total and complete ass on a forum and then turning around to say WELL I HAVE ASPERGERS. Friends tell me often that they didn't even realize I had it until I casually mentioned it, because other people they've met with it are, to be blunt, insufferable jerks. It pisses me off more than a little.
I don't see the disorder as a scapegoat. I don't want people to feel they have to give me special treatment or forgive me for things they wouldn't forgive other people for. They did that to me in high school and you know what? It didn't help. What helped was learning to handle my own problems and facing the consequences like any 'normal' person would be expected to do. I don't think it's asking too much of others to attempt the same.
You make a very good point. I also have Asperger's Syndrome. I've found I had "Neuro-Typical" thoughts about people, especially the ignorant ones. Your art won't show. :joy:
yeah that really kind of sucks. I know a few people diagnosed with Aspergers, like I am, we take the philosophical/creative versin, not a version that may be more mathematical or other (if you can even catagorise the brain at all.) Growing up was a pain cos your brain develops differently to others, but now that I'm an adult I'm actually very good at social situations and even see further into things then 'Nt' a lot of the time. Unfortunately I haven't gotten over social anxiety yet, but I'm working on it cos I still get things out of talking and socializing in groups and with people just like everyone else. If we wanted to, me and my 'Aspie' buddies can be very manipulative as we take a more overall picture when it comes to viewing the things that make up the fabric, the web of the social system. I don't though, however, some of my buddies do mess around with other people's heads. Then, when those same people are scratching their heads, looking at them weirdly with no idea as to the 'hows' that the wool has been pulled over their eyes, those buddies blame any oddities on Aspergers. And it works.
Some people with Aspergers are very, very socially gifted, but can be mean about it. Just watch out, okay?
I totally agree! I have some signals of Asperger...but that isn't reason to be a fucking ass!! I hate when people uses the typical "omfgz i have teh aspergerz!!11!" to use it as a excuse for something wrong they did...it's so patethic!
I've been in this bubble before and usually I just don't bring it up, because when I mention it people seem to assume it means I'm a total jerk. I'm socially inept and I know it, so I stay out of complicated situations instead of try to plow through them.
I also take advantage of the fact that I'm more mathematically and logically inclined than some so-called "neurotypicals" to make up for social skills by brute intelligence, but I'm one of the lucky ones in that respect.
At my last years of high school I was also treated "specially" by my sports teacher, and I told her I didn't like it, because if I lived 16 years (I'm now 18) of my life NOT KNOWING it and learnt stuff as a normal person, why have special help now? and yeah, let's not blame it all on the syndrome.
Good point!

Nearly all of us, if not every single one of us, have come across a deviation that just has a disappointing '...'. Conversely, some of us have even come across a massive wall of text.
Whether we are the people who ask ourselves, "Is that it?", or whether we are the people who ask ourselves, "What can I say?", this guide will hopefully provide you with some insight in how to go about writing a good description for your deviations, a.k.a. your Artist's (or Author's) Comments.
